A One of a Kind Summer of Growth and Discovery in Paris

Since 2022, The American University of Paris (AUP) has welcomed high school students aged 16 and older to its Summer School. In Summer 2024, high school students and recent graduates made up 30% of visiting students on campus, seeking their first university experience in the City of Light.

Academic Experience

In 3- or 6-week sessions during June and July, high school students benefit from small classes (averaging 15 students) led by expert faculty who bring the liberal arts to life through experiential learning across Paris. Accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, AUP offers transferable academic credit for students planning to continue their studies in the U.S., while others may choose to audit classes for the experience.

High school students have a variety of options at AUP Summer School. Many join our French Immersion classes, with four different levels of French instruction from complete beginner to B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. French Immersion students receive about 55 hours of instruction en français over three weeks through classroom exercises and faculty-led off-campus activities. The program also features Friday afternoon excursions outside Paris, offering a deeper experience of French culture beyond the city.

Arts and culture classes are some of the most popular amongst AUP Summer students. Future artists have many options to choose from, including Introduction to Art through Paris Museums and a new skills-based course, Designing Paris, focusing on design methodology and practices. Fashion, one of France's most iconic industries, is highlighted in classes like Inside the Paris Fashion Industry, offering an initial glimpse into the profession. Aspiring writers can join the Creative Writing Summer Institute, with on fiction, creative nonfiction, or poetry workshops. A past high school participant in the Fiction workshop shared, “I was surprised at how Paris became an important piece of our class. We went out into the city, meeting at Sacré Coeur or the Musée d'Orsay...We watched people in their environment and used what we saw to begin telling stories.”

Other students come to AUP Summer School to pursue studies in science, mathematics, politics or business. Classes like Psychology of Criminal Investigations or lab-based Environmental Science provide hands-on, university-level science experiences. The EU and its Discontents: Business, Environment, and Rights, a politics and business course, introduces students both to the inner workings of the European Union and to AUP's interdisciplinary approach to the liberal arts.

Whatever their area of interest, AUP Summer School offers high school students a personalized, dynamic academic experience in the vibrant setting of Paris.

Student Life in Paris

High school students find a home away from home in AUP residence halls. To ensure a sense of community and safety, students under 18 or recent high school graduates with no prior college credits are required to stay in an AUP residence hall unless traveling with family or staying with relatives in the Île-de-France region.

Most high school students reside in AUP's Jouffroy d'Abbans residence hall, a newly renovated building in the 17th arrondissement, designed for both single and shared living. This residence, located in an elegant neighborhood with Haussmannian architecture and easy access to the rue de Lévis pedestrian market street, offers an ideal setting for an initial abroad experience. Two Resident Advisors support students during their stay and help them make connections with a Cheese Tasting Welcome Event and a picnic in the nearby 18th-century Parc Monceau.

On campus, visiting high school students benefit from dedicated student support services. Support begins even before classes start with our one-day Orientation, including programs on safety in Paris, using the metro, a campus tour, and an evening spent socializing with new classmates on a scenic boat ride along the Seine. Students are guided by their Student Advisor, a trained AUP student, who helps them adjust to life on campus and in the city.

Throughout their stay, students have access to comprehensive resources, including AUP's Health team and Guidance Counselors for physical and mental well-being, as well as the Student Development Helpdesk for practical assistance, such as setting up cell phones or obtaining metro passes. Academic support is also available through the library and Academic Resource Center, offering research assistance, peer tutoring, and learning accommodation support.

Student life in Paris extends to off-campus opportunities, too. Past high school students have used their time in Summer School to familiarize themselves with the city, with one former Art student saying, “I gained a sense of the city as well as French-speaking culture by taking less common routes and traveling by metro, getting off at every stop to explore that arrondissement.” Our Cultural Program office facilitates this exploration, offering programming like walking tours and ballet and opera tickets. They also invite students to travel elsewhere in France with weekend day trips to Chantilly, Amiens, Giverny or Champagne.
