College Essays Are Too Important to Outsource to AI

In the rush to adopt AI across every aspect of college counseling, many school counselors and Independent Education Consultants (IECs) are beginning to use AI tools for essay feedback and editing. While AI can certainly assist in areas such as research, school list generation, or brainstorming extracurricular opportunities, essays are fundamentally different. The personal essay remains one of the few parts of an application where judgement, originality, emotional nuance, and human interpretation matter deeply.

Reason 1

The first reason counselors should avoid using AI for essay feedback is that families are paying for human judgement and creativity. College admissions outcomes carry enormous emotional and financial stakes. When counselors outsource essay evaluation to AI, they also outsource the very qualities families expect them to provide: insight, discernment, and strategic thinking. As Bob Sternfels has noted in discussions around AI and leadership, aspiration, judgement, and creativity remain uniquely human capabilities. These are precisely the traits that matter most in essay advising.

Reason 2

Second, AI can make counselors intellectually lazy. Developmental editing is mentally demanding work. Strong essay feedback requires deep engagement with structure, clarity, emotional arc, and student voice. AI-generated feedback creates a framework that editors unconsciously begin to work within — even when that framework is weak, incomplete, or entirely wrong. In practice, many counselors become anchored to the AI’s suggestions rather than independently evaluating the essay from first principles.

Reason 3

Third, AI feedback is often too surface-level to meaningfully improve essays. Most tools provide generic recommendations about clarity, structure, or impact, but fail to identify deeper narrative opportunities or missing emotional substance. The result is feedback that sounds polished but does not substantially strengthen the essay.

Reason 4

Fourth, AI remains particularly weak with early drafts. At this stage, essays require exploration, vulnerability, and discovery, areas where human intuition is essential. AI also tends to flatten student voice during revision, producing essays that sound over-processed and emotionally generic.

Reason 5

Fifth, AI-generated suggestions are increasingly recognizable. Admissions officers are becoming familiar with the overly polished, vague, and formulaic language patterns common in AI-assisted writing. Essays filled with buzzwords, generalized reflection, and unnatural phrasing can quickly lose authenticity.
