Fast-Track to Success: How Indian Students Can Finish U.S. Degrees Sooner at Cal State East Bay

Let's talk about a game-changer for Indian students aiming to study in the U.S.—а strategy that saves both time and tuition while delivering real academic value.

California State University, East Bay (CSUEB) blends two smart initiatives—CBSE credit recognition and the new FAST (4+1) program—enabling qualified undergraduates to complete a Bachelor's and Master's in as little as five years.

Cal State East Bay is part of the largest public university system in the U.S. The California State University (CSU) system is known for affordable cost, high-quality education. Located in Hayward, California, CSUEB is in the heart of the beautiful and culturally diverse San Francisco Bay Area, where our students benefit from professional development and career opportunities in Silicon Valley and Northern California. Cal State East Bay offers over 40 undergraduate programs (and 25 graduate degrees) with merit-based scholarships available for F1 undergraduate international students.

What counsellors should know about opportunities to reduce credits needed to complete academic programs

As you know in the U.S., the standard undergraduate track is a four-year program (120 units total assuming students are taking 15 units per semester for eight semesters). For students who want to further their education at the graduate level, they typically need to spend another 18 months to two years to earn a master's degree (where most programs require 8-12 units per semester with 30-48 units needed to graduate depending on field of study).

In order to help students complete degrees faster, CSUEB is changing the equation:

  • Transfer up to 30 semester units for CBSE Class XII exams with passing grades (in approved subjects detailed on the university website)
  • Double-count up to 12 units of graduate courses in the FAST 4+1 program, which means students start master's-level work while still undergraduates.

In effect, students can graduate faster by taking advantage of one or both of these policies.

Time Saver #1: Earning College Credit from CBSE Board Exams

CSUEB is one of five California State University (CSU) campuses who began awarding university credit for high-scoring CBSE Class XII subjects in 2024. What the CSU is doing is recognizing the quality of the CBSE curriculum as being comparative to IGCSE, International Baccalaureate (IB) or Advanced Placement (AP) classes and accepting those scores similarly to how they award college credit for A-Levels, IB exams, and AP tests.

Each of the CSU campuses participating in the CBSE pilot program determines how it will apply these examinations toward credit at their institution. At CSUEB subjects like Biology, Computer Applications, Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics, Psychology, Physics, Sociology, and more are eligible for college credit. Students earning an A1 or A2 grade can receive 3 to 4 U.S. semester units per subject, up to a maximum of 30 units.

While not every CBSE exam is accepted for credit, a student in the Commerce Stream for example could earn credits for the Economics and Mathematics, thereby entering university with 7 units of credits (and only 113 remaining to graduate). Meanwhile students in STEM streams earning passing scores in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics for example stand to earn 14 units of university credit, which is roughly equivalent to a semester's worth of classes.

Those credits are applied to CSU's General Education (GE) Requirements, allowing CBSE students to skip some typical first-year courses and jump ahead academically.

Result

Students start with some college credit already completed, which means:

  • Fewer classes to graduate;
  • Lower tuition (and potential to save on months of living expenses if they earn a semester or more of credits);
  • Earlier entry into major-specific coursework or graduate-level classes.

Time Saver #2: The FAST 4+1 Program—A Head Start on a Master's —with no premium fees yet

Once on campus, qualified students at CSUEB can apply to join the FAST (Falcon Accelerated Success Track) program—a 4+1 pathway that combines undergraduate and graduate degrees in just five years in most cases.

How It Works

  • Students meeting GPA requirements may apply after earning 60-90 units (typically in their third year).
  • They begin taking graduate-level courses while in the final year of their bachelor's degree.
  • Up to 12 units of coursework are “double-counted”—applied toward both undergraduate and graduate degrees.
  • Students continue paying undergraduate tuition for these graduate courses.
  • After completing 120 total units, students are reclassified as graduate students and finish their master's in just one additional year (or additional 18 months for MBA)
  • Undergraduate majors eligible for FAST programs at CSUEB include Biology, Business Administration, Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Data Science, Economics, Environmental Science, Global Studies, Kinesiology, and more.

Bringing it all together

With the FAST program, students have the potential to -cut costs, reduce stress, and launch careers earlier.

  • Significantly reduced total cost, thanks to skipping credits and paying undergrad rates longer (Double-counted Master's courses ares billed at undergraduate rate)
  • Degree acceleration—graduate one or two years earlier than peers.
  • Better ROI: early entry into the workforce makes this a strategic investment.
  • Reputable, accredited programs across Business, STEM, and other fields
  • Bay Area advantage: access to Silicon Valley internships and networking.
