The past years have been incredibly tough for workers worldwide, with the global pandemic causing lockdowns and job losses. The situation worsened with war, higher energy and food prices, and declining wages. Technology, especially generative AI, is set to transform white-collar jobs. At the same time, there's a focus on green transformation, which will replace carbon-intensive roles with new green jobs. These changes have disrupted livelihoods and created uncertainty within the labor market.

The recently published Future of Jobs Report 2023 by the World Economic Forum (WEF) examines the impact of macrotrends and technological advancements on jobs and skills in the next five years. According to the report, approximately 23% of all jobs worldwide will undergo changes during this period. The study encompasses 45 economies and 673 million workers, predicting the creation of 69 million new jobs alongside the elimination of 83 million jobs.

The combination of simultaneous changes in the broader economic landscape, the integration of new technologies in the workplace, and the prevailing uncertainty about the future often leads many individuals to feel frustrated with their current job prospects, apprehensive about future opportunities, and disheartened by the widening economic inequality. Similarly, many companies express concerns regarding the availability of skilled talent required to thrive in this evolving context, with 60% of companies worried about skills gaps and 54% anxious about attracting qualified individuals.

Emerging Job Trends

There will be a significant demand for various roles related to renewable energy, such as renewable energy engineers, solar energy installation and systems engineers, sustainability specialists, and environmental protection professionals. This demand is expected to result in the growth of approximately one million jobs in these areas. The sectors experiencing the largest absolute job gains will be education, with an estimated increase of three million jobs, and agriculture, with a projected growth of four million jobs. These gains are driven by a combination of demographic factors and the application of new technologies to these sectors. Furthermore, the shifting of supply chains and a shift in focus towards resilience rather than efficiency is anticipated to create a net increase in job opportunities, particularly benefiting economies in Asia and the Middle East.

Technology Impact

Around 25% of companies anticipate a decline in jobs due to the adoption of new technologies, while more than half expect job growth as a result. Truly, the relationship between humans and machines is shifting to a different realm. Although there has been a decrease in the expectation of physical and manual labor being replaced by machines, tasks that involve reasoning, communication, and coordination skills that humans excel in are expected to become more automatable in the future. This shift is not surprising considering that almost 75% of surveyed companies plan to incorporate generative artificial intelligence, which ranks second, following humanoid and industrial robots, in terms of expectations for job losses.

Skilling

The findings reveal that approximately 44% of an individual's skills, on average across all professions, will require some form of change. The skills that are in the highest demand, as reported by a significant portion of companies, include analytical and creative thinking, technological literacy, curiosity and a commitment to lifelong learning, resilience and adaptability, systems thinking, and proficiency in AI and big data. Conversely, skills such as global citizenship, sensory processing abilities, manual dexterity, endurance, and precision are currently experiencing less demand. For workers in declining industries, significant efforts in reskilling and transitioning are necessary. On the other hand, individuals in fields experiencing change or growth must focus on upskilling and fostering a mindset of continuous learning. Fortunately, acquiring new skills can be accomplished rapidly, and online learning platforms provide an equal opportunity for workers of all educational backgrounds to obtain valuable credentials.
