The Unexpected Lessons of the Process

Let the Process Shape You: A College Application Journey

When I first stepped into the college application process, I imagined a clear path: shortlist top universities, craft a compelling application, and hit submit. Simple, right? But what unfolded was far from linear. As I applied to schools across the U.S., U.K., and Europe to study Business and Finance, the journey became less about getting in and more about growing up.

From Outcome to Introspection

At the start, I was focused on results. Which college would accept me? Would I be “enough"? But somewhere between my third personal statement and sixth supplemental response, something shifted. I stopped writing for approval and started writing for clarity. I began choosing authenticity over perfection. Slowly, I realized the destination mattered less than how I was getting there. This process taught me a powerful lesson: the value isn't just in the outcome. It's in the rewrites, the moments of doubt, the late-night realizations that push you to understand yourself better. It's in asking the hard questions and being brave enough to answer them honestly.

Writing as a Window

My personal statement began as a task but soon became a mirror. Reflecting on past experiences—both proud and painful—helped me reconnect with parts of myself I'd overlooked. It wasn't just about impressing admissions officers; it was about rediscovering who I was and who I wanted to become. For the first time, writing felt less like an assignment and more like a form of discovery. Even the dreaded "Why Us?" essays revealed more than expected. In trying to define why a university suited me, I found myself defining what I actually wanted: meaningful mentorship, global perspectives, and a place that valued curiosity as much as achievement.

Extracurriculars: More Than a Resume

In the race to meet deadlines, I had nearly forgotten why I began community service in the first place. But revisiting those stories—mentoring young women, distributing sanitizers during COVID—reminded me that these weren't just activities; they were reflections of my values. They showed who I was when no one was watching.

Guidance That Grounded Me

Working with my college counselor brought structure and direction to what often felt like chaos. His honest feedback challenged me to dig deeper and think sharper. He didn't just edit my essays; he helped me take ownership of my story. I wasn't told what to write—I was encouraged to explore why it mattered. His questions often led to better answers than I could've come up with alone.

Falling Back in Love with Writing

Ironically, amid the stress of applications, I found joy in writing again. I began to enjoy refining my thoughts and watching my ideas take shape. What started as a chore evolved into a ritual—a quiet space to connect the dots and reflect with purpose.

Final Thoughts

This journey was intense. Balancing schoolwork, extracurriculars, SAT prep, and application deadlines was overwhelming at times. But I walked away with more than just college decisions—I walked away with perspective. If I could go back and tell myself one thing, it would be this: don't just chase the end goal. Let the process stretch you. Let it change you. Because beyond the acceptance letters lies a deeper reward: discovering your own voice, and with it, a clearer sense of what you want from college.
