The Admission Officer Who Sees the World From a Bus Window
1 - An Unforgettable Travel Memory.
It was during my first college recruitment trip in India where I witnessed all matters of life from my bus on my way to visit high schools. For someone who is curious and loves observing people, the streets of India offer so much life and vibrance. From a fruit shop setting up for the day to a herd of cows making their way to a pasture, I loved every minute of my India travels. It was sensory overload to say the least but there was so much motion, so much progress, and so many colors!
2 - Most unexpected question a student has ever asked you.
One time, a student asked if they could study marine biology at Centre College. Centre is located in Kentucky which is landlocked. But the question wasn’t the most expected part of it all. The most unexpected part of it was my answer which was “Yes! You can study marine biology at Centre. It’s just that the class will be in Bahamas thought our study abroad program."
3 - If you weren’t in admissions, what job would you secretly love to have?
If I wasn’t an admission counselor, I would love to be a geopolitical risk analyst. As a former government affairs professional, I love the dynamism of working at the intersection of governments, businesses, and civil society.
4 - What’s a totally random skill you've picked up because of your job?
I have learned to map out visiting high school, eating lunch at a local spot, and seeing something interesting during a visit to an area. As a college admission counselor who is always on the go, squeezing all of these in is very challenging but it is possible. We are expert travel planners!
5 - What’s one thing you wish students knew about admissions, that they often don’t?
I wish that students knew that we (their college admission counselors) are also human beings that want the best for the students they work with. We celebrate their admission. We recognize and empathize with the struggles and challenges they face. We are sad if the students we work with don’t come to our institutions (but we are secretly happy that they found their college homes!).
6 - If your college were a person, how would you describe their personality in three words?
Kind, intelligent, and adventurous!
7 - What’s the most oddly specific club or organization on campus?
I don’t think this is the most oddly specific club, but Centre has a Gardening Club. The Gardening Club maintains a garden where each member maintains a plot of land to grow whatever they like. The garden is located in a place unofficially known as the Jurassic Park (there is a story behind this!).
