Squash, Success, and Study: The Denison Difference

The Squash Recruitment Process at Denison University

Located in Granville, OH, Denison University is a top liberal arts college known for its strong tradition of excellence in both academics and athletics. With a close-knit community, top-tier faculty, and exceptional athletic programs, Denison offers a welcoming environment for international students who want to balance their academic goals with competitive sports. Now in its third year as a varsity sport, Denison Squash provides both men's and women's teams the opportunity to train, grow, and compete at a high level. Coach Michael MacDonald, also in his third year as head coach, notes that the team members are incredibly supportive of one another and are highly motivated to succeed both on the court and in the classroom.

The Denison Squash Admissions Path

Recruitment for Denison Squash typically begins during a prospective student's junior year of high school. September 1st marks the first day that students are allowed to reach out and express interest in joining the team. This may be followed by conversations with Coach MacDonald. For international students, email and Zoom calls are the most effective ways to stay in touch, and they may also be encouraged to share video highlights of their play or results from matches and tournaments they have participated in.

Starting January 1st, prospective student-athletes may visit campus for an official tour, if interested and available. Coach MacDonald also facilitates connections between prospective athletes and current team members, providing a valuable opportunity to learn more about what it's like to be a student-athlete at Denison.

Given the selective nature of Denison's admissions process, prospective squash players are strongly encouraged to apply through Early Decision 1 or 2. These are both binding agreements requiring students to commit to enroll at Denison if admitted. Although athletic recruits may also apply Regular Decision, the majority of student-athletes elect to apply Early Decision.

The application process at Denison begins by completing an online application. There is no application fee, no supplemental essay, and Denison follows a no-harm test-optional policy. If English is the primary language of instruction at a student's high school, the English proficiency requirement is automatically waived. Additionally, international students are asked to complete a Certification of Finances form to assess their financial contribution. As a Division-III school, Denison does not offer athletic scholarships; however, student-athletes are eligible for the same financial aid opportunities as other applicants.

The Competitive Edge

At Denison, we emphasize the competitive edge our students gain through the resources available to help them succeed, both during and after college. The Knowlton Center for Career Exploration encourages students to explore career options, pursue internships, and prepare for job applications. The Denison Edge, located in downtown Columbus, OH, offers real-world career skills training. With a 9:1 student-to-faculty ratio, Denison provides personalized learning and mentorship, ensuring students receive an education that will serve them well. For student-athletes, the competitive edge extends to their training and development on the squash court in the Mitchell Athletic Facility. At the start of the school year, team captains gather the squash teams for their first practices. Full-time training begins in the fall, supplemented by strength training and other conditioning sessions. Outside of regular practice, Coach MacDonald offers one-on-one coaching sessions and video review. With a full 20-match season, Denison squash players enjoy a competitive schedule that promotes both growth, experience, and commitment to being a part of a team.

Denison also makes it easy for families to follow the action—home matches are live-streamed, so relatives around the world can watch and cheer for Denison. There is no additional financial burden for squash players, as the university covers travel costs and lodging for away matches, and ensures minimal time away from classes. Uniforms and laundry services are provided, and basic equipment (including a new racket or pair of shoes each season) is made available to team members.

Denison University offers a unique and supportive environment for international student athletes looking to excel both academically and athletically. With strong coaching, comprehensive resources, and a commitment to student success, Denison's squash program provides athletes with the tools they need to thrive on the court and beyond.
