To CS or not to CS: That is the Question.
Why A Computer Science Degree Is Still Worth It in the Age of AI

For decades, Computer Science was the default “safe” choice for ambitious Indian students. Good salaries, global mobility, respectable dinner-table approval. Then generative AI arrived, began writing code in seconds, and suddenly every parent WhatsApp group had a new expert declaring, “Software jobs are finished.” They are not. But the old version of Computer Science probably is. AI can already generate routine code, correct syntax, build basic websites and automate tasks once given to junior developers. This means that a student who enters CS only because they are good at mathematics, enjoy gaming, or have been told it guarantees a Silicon Valley salary may be in for an unpleasant surprise.
Yet, the real value of a strong CS education lies beyond typing code. It teaches students to break complicated problems into smaller parts, understand systems, test assumptions, spot errors and ask why an apparently intelligent machine has produced an extremely confident piece of nonsense. In an AI-driven world, these abilities become more valuable, not less.
The job market is also broader than the headlines suggest. Technology professionals do not work only at Google, Microsoft or Infosys. Banks need cybersecurity experts. Hospitals need health-data specialists. Manufacturers need automation engineers. Governments need digital infrastructure. Media companies need recommendation systems. Climate organisations need data scientists. Almost every serious industry is now, partly, a technology industry.
So, should an Indian student still major in Computer Science?
Yes, but with four clear conditions.
First, choose a rigorous programme, not one that spends four years teaching yesterday’s programming languages. Look for strong foundations in algorithms, mathematics, statistics, databases, systems, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.
Second, combine CS with another field. The most interesting careers may emerge at the intersections: CS and biology, CS and finance, CS and design, CS and public policy, CS and psychology. A technically competent student who also understands human behaviour, medicine or business may be far more valuable than someone who can merely produce code faster.
Third, build. A GitHub profile, an app used by real people, a research project, an open-source contribution or a failed startup often reveals more than a certificate from yet another online coding course.
Finally, learn to communicate. The future will reward people who can explain technical ideas, work across teams and decide which problems are worth solving. AI may write the code, but it cannot always decide what should be built, for whom, and at what ethical cost.
Computer Science is not dying. It is growing up. For Indian families, the decision should therefore begin with aptitude and curiosity, not placement statistics. A student who dislikes abstraction, debugging and continuous learning should not be pushed into CS merely because it sounds secure. The degree remains worthwhile, but the bargain has changed. Students should not study CS to become human coding machines. Machines have applied for that job already. They should study it to become better thinkers, system-builders and problem-solvers in a world increasingly run by software.
