Toronto’s Lester B. Pearson Scholarship
A Full Scholarship for Just 37 International Students
For an international student hoping to attend the University of Toronto, the Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship is the university’s biggest prize. U of T describes it as its most prestigious scholarship for international students, and only approximately 37 students worldwide are selected each year.
The attraction is obvious: this is essentially a full four-year undergraduate scholarship. It covers tuition, books, incidental university fees and full residence support for four years. It can be used for first-entry undergraduate programs across the University of Toronto, although there is one important detail: if you apply to multiple U of T programs, the Pearson Scholarship is ultimately tied to your first-choice program at the time scholarship decisions are made.
Who can apply?
For students entering U of T in September 2027, applicants must be international students requiring a Canadian study permit, be in their final year of secondary school in 2026–27 or have graduated no earlier than June 2026, and must not already be attending post-secondary education. But students cannot simply apply independently. Every applicant must first be nominated by their high school, and each school may nominate only one student per year. U of T explicitly asks schools to choose the student who best represents the qualities of a Pearson Scholar. This means the competition begins before your application ever reaches Toronto. At a strong IB, A-Level or international school, becoming your school's single nominee may itself be highly competitive.
What is U of T looking for?
This is not merely a “highest grades wins” scholarship. U of T repeatedly identifies four qualities: exceptional academic achievement, creativity, leadership potential and the potential to contribute positively to the global community. Recent winners illustrate the level involved. U of T profiled 2025 Indian Pearson Scholar Alan Jacob, for example, who had designed and patented an AI-based medical-imaging device, developed research around “quantum intelligence,” founded a research organisation and won national and international awards. Other scholars have built environmental education initiatives, worked on reef restoration and led substantial community projects. The lesson is important: Pearson generally rewards depth, intellectual initiative and demonstrated impact, rather than a long list of disconnected extracurricular activities.
How do you apply?
There are three separate steps for 2027 entry:
1. Your school nominates you by October 9, 2026.
2. You submit your U of T admission application through OUAC by October 16, 2026.
3. Once nominated, U of T sends you a private Pearson application link. The scholarship application and required documents must be submitted by November 6, 2026.
One particularly important new warning: U of T states that generative AI tools, including ChatGPT, may not be used to create content for undergraduate award applications. Applicants found using AI-generated content can be disqualified.
What are my chances?
Extremely small. There are only around 37 awards globally each year, although U of T does not publish the total number of nominated applicants, so any website claiming an exact Pearson “acceptance rate” should be treated cautiously. The university itself calls Pearson one of its most competitive scholarships. Students should therefore apply because their record genuinely fits the scholarship—not because they need Pearson in order to make U of T financially possible without having another fundig plan.
How did the scholarship begin?
The program was announced in 2016 and welcomed its first cohort in 2017. It is named after Lester Bowles Pearson, a University of Toronto alumnus, former Canadian prime minister and Nobel Peace Prize recipient. The inaugural group included students from countries ranging from India and Singapore to Azerbaijan and Sri Lanka. Nearly a decade later, Pearson has developed into a substantial international program: U of T reports more than $12 million in annual funding in 2024, with scholars coming from a global network spanning 188 countries.
