Study in Japan Without Needing Japanese at Admission

Waseda University Japan’s English Taught Bachelor Degrees

Waseda offers English-based undergraduate study across six schools, comprising ten degree or major routes. Japanese proficiency is not required at application, and Waseda publishes India-specific documentation rules for CBSE/AISSCE and CISCE/ISC applicants. Most programmes begin in September; SILS also offers April entry. All are four years. One caveat: JCulP is officially English-based, but overseas students must take Japanese-language courses after enrolment.

Political Science, Economics and Global Political Economy

The School of Political Science and Economics awards three BAs. All have a pronounced quantitative spine, including statistics, mathematical analysis, game theory and data analysis, strengthened further from 2027. Political Science suits candidates considering international relations or public policy who are comfortable with mathematics; Economics is preferable for students targeting economic research, finance or postgraduate economics; Global Political Economy is the most distinctive hybrid for trade, development and geopolitics. Waseda’s current India checklist requires Grade XII Mathematics. The 2026 successful cohort averaged 1490 SAT, 34.2 ACT and 38.9/42 IB. These are averages, not cut-offs. The 2027 application calendar is not yet published; the previous cycle ran 8 January–10 February. First-year 2027 charges: ~US$8,070.

TAISI: Social Sciences

The BA in Social Sciences through TAISI combines economics, politics, humanities, history, marketing and law with fields such as peace-building, community development, organisations, and economic and environmental sustainability. Practicum courses make it notably more applied than a conventional social-sciences degree. It is particularly persuasive for students interested in development, sustainability, NGOs or social enterprise. Intake is approximately 60; 2026 successful applicants averaged 1430 SAT, 32 ACT and 37/42 IB. The 2027 guide is due by October. Waseda cancelled the 2026 third round after sufficient earlier offers, so applying late carries practical risk. First-year charges: ~US$7,873.

SILS: International Liberal Studies

SILS awards the BA in International Liberal Studies. Its seven clusters range from economics and business to governance, international relations, philosophy, communication, culture and science, with statistics and data science embedded in the curriculum. It is Waseda’s best English-based option for an intellectually broad student, but less compelling for someone already committed to economics, politics or engineering. For non-Japanese-native students, overseas study is optional; Japanese-language study forms part of the programme. For April 2027 overseas admission, formal applications run 1–8 September 2026. September 2027 Early Admission runs 7–12 January and Regular Admission 13–28 January 2027. First-year charges: ~US$10,606.

JCulP: Japanese Culture in a Global Context

JCulP sits within the School of Culture, Media and Society. Students pursue Transcultural Studies and graduate with a BA in Literature, examining Japanese literature, culture and society comparatively. It is coherent for students considering Japanese studies, cultural industries, media or East Asian studies; merely “liking Japan” is insufficient intellectual justification. Overseas intake is approximately 15. Japanese is unnecessary at admission, but Japanese-language courses are compulsory after enrolment. Waseda currently indicates early-January to early-February applications and late-April results. First-year charges: ~US$8,113.

Science and Engineering

Four English-based STEM majors are available: Mathematical Sciences, Computer Science and Communications Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Civil and Environmental Engineering. Mathematical Sciences can confer a BSc or BEng depending on departmental affiliation. The other three confer BEng degrees. Computer Science and Communications Engineering is broader than conventional CS because networks and communications are central; Mechanical Engineering extends into robotics and medical engineering; Civil and Environmental Engineering emphasises infrastructure, sustainability and urban resilience.

For Indian applicants, Waseda’s current checklist requires Grade XII Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. September 2027 applications run 7–28 January; document results are released 9 April, interviews occur 17 or 18 April, and final results arrive 23 April. First-year charges are ~US$11,646 for Fundamental Science and Engineering and ~US$11,834 for Creative Science and Engineering.
